Recently I've been DYING for new clothes. I just want to start fresh and essentially, that's what I'm trying to do. I am attempting to eliminate the overwhelming, over bearing and over stated pieces in my closet to declutter and make dressing easier for myself. So today, I'm going to be sharing some awesome tips and tricks that I've gathered from research of the best stylists on how to define your own style!

1. Less is more: Less is more in fashion. Always. The first step in defining your style is by decluttering the mess of a closet you might have (I know I do!). Look in your closet for key and essential pieces. Pieces that are easy to mix and match and layer with. I liked using Jessi from thedarlingdetail's guide to cleaning out your closet! It helped me a lot to rid any unnecessary items.
  • Tops: For starters you should have about 5-6 black, white and grey under shirts like cami's, halter necks, tank tops, basic tee's and long sleeve shirts. These are the foundation to any outfit

  • Bottoms: The basics- black, blue, and white denim. You'll also find it helpful to have a pair of flare jeans and some boyfriend jeans! I also have a pair of joggers/trousers and "slacks." I also believe a black pencil skirt is important in a wardrobe!

  • Layering pieces: Cardigans! I think maybe 2-3 cardigans is a good start to having a capsule wardrobe. As well as owning a classic black blazer.

2. Focus on the basics and let the rest come easy. I recently saw an article on one of my fashion inspiration's Gina DeWolfe and she talked about her tips on keeping a well put together wardrobe. I stand by everything she says so go check it out! Invest in a gorgeous piece that you feel will match with the rest of your wardrobe every once and a while. Building up your wardrobe slowly will add much more value to it.

3. Stick to an aesthetic. It's easier said than done. I feel like my style is a bit of everything but the more I buy clothes the more I am realizing exactly what I want to narrow my aesthetic down to. For me, I am aiming towards a minimalist aesthetic with neutral colors. However if you're going for a different aesthetic like boho, classic, feminine, or something else then look up fashion inspiration via Pinterest or Tumblr get a feel for what kinds of pieces are needed to complete outfits and strive to only buy those key and essential pieces!
I hope this helped you a bit! Check out this post as well that talks about the five piece challenge.
